Post Memorization of vocabulary and catechism Reply with quote
My 5th grader is struggling in memorizing definitions and catechism answers. Does anyone have some tips on how to help or motivate her?
Thanks,
Joan

If she has not been memorizing, it will be more challenging. I would suggest doing it in little pieces. Don't make her memorize everything that is in the course plans. Make sure she understands the religion well enough for you to know she does understand it. With the vocabulary, have her memorize one or two and add to it with each lesson. Sometimes singing the material makes it stick with the student better. A reward chart here might help motivate her, also.

I sometimes pare down the answers. Some answers are about a paragraph long. With these I underline what I consider the bare essentials and have that be what is memorized. I also allow paraphrasing instead of word for word.

Also only the Faith and Life questions need to be memorized. Sometimes the St Joseph Baltimore Catechism has the exact questions or very similar so it will help in memorizing in the Faith and Life questions. I read the St Joseph questions and my child answers. That involves three senses (seeing, saying, hearing) so more should be retained than the child just reading (one sense-seeing).

Thanks to both of you for the suggestions. I will certainly give them a try.
God bless,
Joan
